Gain Twist refers to barrel rifling; a very slow twist as the bullet enters the barrel and increasing “spin” as the bullet passes down the barrel. This method was used extensively on percussion era guns mostly shooting round ball soft lead bullets. In 1873, Colt submitted “test” revolver chambered for the 44 American S&W cartridge to the US government for approval, using the gain twist rifling design. The government decided on the 45 caliber with constant twist rifling (1:16), instead. In the meantime Colt had produced a number of the barrel’s (estimated at 100 – 150) and when colt started producing 44-40 in 1877, they decided to use up the barrels on hand. They all scattered throughout the 41000-43500 serial range. Serial 41078 is the earliest documented one.
