#4611 Winchester 1866 Musket, 99XXX range (1872), 44RF
Description
#4611 Winchester 1866 Musket, 99XXX range (1872), 44RF with an unusually nice black-powder bore that will likely clean to about a “9” on a scale of 10, nice smooth action. All, however, of minimal importance unless it were to be shot (which is a highly unlikely scenario considering the high cost and scarcity of 44RF ammunition!) This musket looks to have had good care all of its long life but has been altered somewhere along the way with a replaced cheek piece and checked butt stock and what appears to also be a well-done replaced fore stock. It has also been “juiced up” with Cold Blue on the barrel and magazine, but the metal is about fine with no pitting of mention, a good address, and the brass is at least average. The sling swivels, lever latch, are intact, the rear sight is a contemporary replaced short ladder style. And while it makes no significant difference to the value, but only as an interesting side note, this gun was part of Kareem Abdul Jabar (the basketball great of the 1970s) gun collection that was sold off several years ago. And while these muskets are not as “glamorous” as either the rifles or carbines in the Winchester 1866 model, they are however by FAR the most scarce configuration ...and many were bought by people who wanted the longer barrel for its accuracy and yet were not concerned about the overall length as would be the case in a saddle gun. This is an interesting specimen, and certainly will be one of the least expensive ‘66s on the Internet. There are a lot of pictures of this old Yellowboy, so if they all do not load up, be sure to e-mail me and I’ll forward them along to you. VG++ $3650
