#SE240 Colt 1851 Navy Conversion With History
Description
#SE240 Colt 1851 Navy Conversion this is a 38 caliber long Colt six shot cartridge conversion that was originally a 36 caliber percussion revolver. It is chambered for the center fire cartridge. The conversion was probably completed in the mid-1870s, with about 3,800 produced. This gun has a 7 ½ inch octagon barrel and a round un-fluted cylinder. The gun was originally made with a blue finish. However, now it has a nun with has a brown patina. The grips are factory walnut. The trigger guard and back strap are brass. All serial numbers match, with the exception of the wedge, which holds the barrel to the frame. This gun shows evidence of being converted twice. Once for the rim fire cartridge, and then later for the center fire. As was typical with the conversions, the loading lever holes were filled in and a new screw hole was drilled for the extractor. The cylinder was milled down for cartridge use, a conversion ring added and a loading gate with internal springs installed. The hammer was modified to accept the appropriate firing pin.
Very hard to find guns with history on them. This is a great civil war gun use during the Civil War. Then after the Civil War carried west and used on the frontier. Research from Colt shows that this gun was shipped to Schuyler, Hartley and Graham, New York, New York in July 30, 1861. Further research from the Springfield research service, shows that this gun went to company E of the 17th Pennsylvania Volunteer Cavalry. In July, 1862 President Abraham Lincoln called for 3 Regiments of Cavalry from Pennsylvania & the 17th Pennsylvania was one of them. By Nov,1862 the Unit was mustered, commanded by Col Josiah Kellogg ( a Mexican War Veteran ) The majority of the members of the 17th Pennsylvania Cavalry hailed from central Pa ( Co E from Lebanon) and yet Co L was from Montgomery & Chester Counties and there were boys in Co I from Philadelphia Pennsylvania . This comes with a Colt historical letter and a page from Springfield research books. Serial #1082XX
