#4796 I.G. Paal Combination Gun (AKA, “Cape Rifle”), percussion

Description

#4796 I.G. Paal Combination Gun (AKA, “Cape Rifle”), percussion of what looks to be about a 20ga shotgun and a 10MM (40cal) rifle barrel, side by side. What is quite unusual about this nice quality European sporting gun is the fact that the barrels are both octagonal; I’ve seen very few that were not round. It is marked with the maker and area of manufacture (Biberach) in acid etching on the rib between the barrels and the metal is smooth with crisp markings and edges. The wood has the usual European cheek-piece stock that is modestly embellished with some raised scroll work as well as wrist checking. Overall, a very decent and well made type of gun that was very popular in much of Europe but never seemed to have caught the fancy of the American market. Mfg’d circa 1860-1870. About VG++. $895
