#4922 Winchester 1886 OBFMCB 40/82WCF, 40XXX (1890)
Description
#4922 Winchester 1886 OBFMCB 40/82WCF, 40XXX (1890), very good bore (7+ on a scale of 10) but a very, VERY stiff action! As can be seen in the photos, this gun has been professionally refinished but when re-assembled, some new and/or replacement parts were installed which makes it very hard to easily cycle the action. It also is missing the elevator spring and does need to have the action smoothed out so as to be able to cycle the shells through both easily and smoothly. The exterior is near Fine+ with the exception of the wood. The forearm is both chipped on the one side with a severe sliver and it has had finger grooves recessed similar to military guns of the 1890s. The butt stock has been sanded undersized at the tangs, as well, and to make this a really excellent gun, it should have better wood. The standard open rear sight is a generic buckhorn sporting sight and there is an extra hole in the rear upper tang for a long range tang sight.
Now, all the bad stuff said, this is still a REALLY handsome ’86 and well worth a small bit of effort and some better wood. It retains 100% bright case colors on the frame, 95% coverage of a 70% density dulling blue on the barrel, some traces of blue (but mostly grey-brown) on the magazine tube, and grey metal on the butt plate; no pitting. The caliber is one of the best of that era for most all hunting in North America, and has very good ballistics, if one cares about distance shooting. There are lots of pictures of this neat old gun, so if they all do not load up, be sure to e-mail me and I’ll forward them along to you. About Fine as described. $2395
