#4559 “Protection” marked revolver, 3-1/4”x.28caliber

Description

#4559 “Protection” marked revolver, 3-1/4”x.28caliber, pocket sized six shot, made between 1857-58 with about 800 total made so definitely NOT a common gun. No one seems to know for certain who made this small revolver, but the flared grip design and the basic frame shape suggests the firm of Eli Whitney as being the maker. This is the earlier style with the squared off front of the frame, the later ones were more rounded for easier retraction or insertion into a coat or trouser pocket. It has some good traces of thin blue remaining and fine smooth metal and VG grips, but it does need a new hand spring because it does not revolve when pointed upwards but does revolve when pointed down. Other than that, it is about “Fine”. A very scarce and interesting little gun and would be a great addition to a percussion revolver collection.
