Description

422R Springfield 1873 Trapdoor Carbine, cal. 45/70, SN 41XXX manuf. 1875. This is a 1st Model Carbine with the narrow long wrist stock which has been drilled for the trapdoor butt plate and has all the cleaning rods in it. I have removed the butt plate and the drilled key hole is factory drilled or Arsenal. The drilling is perfectly done. I also checked the fore end to make sure it was not modified or pieced together. The cartouche is worn off the wrist but it does have the P Inspectors stamp on the bottom behind the trigger guard. It has the 1st Model hammer, trigger, high arch breech block with 1873 stamp and crossed arrows and the 1873 stamped lock plate. It also has the 1879 rear sight without screw slots, C stamped left side and also on elevator. The butt plate and the rear sight are the only Arsenal modifications on this nice 1st Model Carbine. The stock has dents and dings from use, no cracks, and has not been sanded or refinished. The action is tight and crisp and the bore is a shiny 8+ with good rifling. The metal is smooth overall with no pitting. The breech block is silvery on the outside with light case colors on the inside. The lock plate has the blue indicative of early lock plates. The serial number and lock plate stamps are sharp and clear. The butt plate has slivery case with B 31 stamped on the top behind the U.S. stamp. A very nice example of an early Trapdoor Carbine that is in the pre-Custer serial range.
Overall condition very good.
