Description
#4846 Winchester Model 1876 OBFMCB rifle, 40/60WCF, extremely late production being in the early 63XXX range, and about 600 numbers away from the very last one made (this rifle made in 1892). Overall, this is a quite superior gun, having 40-50% coverage of a 30-35% density blue that is very even in color and just flattening, thinning, and plumming to grey-brown; the densest blue being on the lower barrel flats. (As is very typical with original finish blued guns, they will look more brownish in direct sunlight and more bluish in artificial light.) The case colors have faded to a thin brown patina. The wood is about average or a little better, and has only the usual scratches and bumps from years of storage and handling, the worst being on the left side of the forearm which has several deep dings but no wear or other deficits of mention. Mechanically it looks to have had little to almost no use or ill care; the action is tight and the bore is Fine. Overall, it is a very nice and very handsome example of this scarce and highly prized “Centennial Model” Winchester. These impressive large-bore lever action 1876 rifles were by far the lowest production of all the antique lever Winchesters and their survival rate seems even much less because of the antique calibers becoming obsolete so quickly. Many ‘76s were therefore being junked well before the far more popular calibered 1873 or 1886 models in the same conditions. It will take a good bit of time and more money to find a better Model 1876 than this gun. About Fine overall. $4995.
