Description
#4955 Sharps 1874 Octagon Sporting Rifle, 30”x45/70 medium weight barrel, doubleset triggers, factory (Dr. Moore) letter verifying delivery to Omaha, Nebraska in 1878, so obviously this Sharps rifle was a TRUE “buff killer” and not some target or East Coast deer hunters gun. It retains a soft plum blue-brown on the barrel and a silvery-brown on the reciever and no pitting of consequence. Standard Bridgeport address and the Old Reliable barrel logo. Very nice bore and smooth tight action, standard Lawrence patented rear elevated sight. The wood is very good but does have tapered slivers on both sides of the foretip as can be seen in the photographs. (There are about twenty photos in all, so give them time to load). The crescent buttplate is the military style, but a configuration that is unknown to me, as it has a more triangular heel rather than the nipple-shape that is usually seen ….but it looks in character with the gun in age and appearance, so may have been some special order (although I have my doubts that this is the case). Overall, a VERY handsome buffalo gun that shows care and good ownership in the last 130 years. VG++ $11,500
